ALAN BUTLER, AIA, LEED AP

Senior Principal

For Alan, architecture as a profession has been the perfect vehicle to merge artistic and technological interests. Trained as a sculptor and with a background in photography, geography, construction and land planning, his work with the firm over the last 24 years has been about bringing cross-disciplinary understanding to complex architectural projects. Alan thrives in immersing himself in other people’s worlds – whether it’s libraries, police training facilities, or campus master plans. Understanding the client’s culture and programming needs has been essential in crafting an architectural environment that is both supportive and engaging.

His recent publication of Touring Libraries reflects an intensive study of libraries on the west coast and beyond that will help guide clients in their own explorations of design possibilities. His current project focus is programming and leading early phase developments of projects. Recent initiatives within the firm include research and teaching on topics of evidence-based design for both educational and healthcare environments.

Alan received a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Oregon in 1985. He has done post-graduate work in Geography at Sonoma State University, and has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is a licensed architect in California and a LEED Accredited Professional. An active member of his community, Alan also serves on the Board for the Redwood Empire Food Bank.
