Designed as a community hub, the new Multi-Use Building at Kawana Springs Elementary School replaces an aging facility with a welcoming space to gather, celebrate, play, and learn. With a re-envisioned administrative entry the project renews the campus identity and advances equity across the Bellevue Union School District.

A Bold Roofline for Community Gathering

The architecture of the new Multi-Use Building centers around a dramatic shed roof that shelters the school’s largest gathering space. This distinctive form intentionally signals the heart of campus, a place for performances, sports, celebrations, and daily activities that bring the school community together. A secondary, lower shed roof extends the gesture to the main entry, creating an inviting, clearly defined arrival and a sheltered waiting area for students during end-of-day pickup. With the addition of this building, the entry is consolidated into a single, controlled access point to enhance campus security, with clear visibility and direct supervision for the adjacent administrative functions.

Light, Learning, and Performance

Natural daylight plays a crucial role in supporting students’ well-being, focus, and comfort throughout the day. A combination of north-facing clerestory windows in the shed roof and large windows at the back of the stage provide a unique feature that fills the multi-use space with soft, consistent natural light even when the stage is in use. For specific events, roller shades can be lowered to control light and obscure exterior views. Heavy theater drapery can also be drawn across the stage at both the front and rear for dramatic performances. The space adapts effortlessly between performance venue, cafeteria, sports court, and shared community room, always illuminated in ways that enhance comfort, energy efficiency, and a welcoming, engaging atmosphere.

Built for Versatility

The stage is thoughtfully aligned along the length of the room to maximize sightlines, ensuring clear views for every audience member—whether watching a performance on stage or seated on the stage platform to take in a sports game on the floor. Its generous width draws viewers closer to the action, creating an intimate, immersive experience that strengthens audience connection. Designed as a true multipurpose space, the building supports theater and music performances, daily gym use with game striping and basketball hoops, and cafeteria functions with pocket tables that fold out for lunch periods.

Designed for the Future

Sustainability was a guiding principle throughout the design. The south-facing shed roof is structurally and electrically prepared for a future photovoltaic array, enabling the Multi-Use Building to achieve Net-Zero Energy operation. This forward-thinking approach provides the district with a long-term pathway to lower operational costs and a reduced carbon footprint, delivering lasting benefits for both students and the wider community. In close collaboration with the District, the project team developed furniture selections and specifications that balance durability, flexibility, and ergonomics as well as functional requirements. Carefully selected for the demands of a variety of distinct administrative spaces, these furnishings simplify maintenance and service, while providing lasting comfort, functionality, and value for years to come.

This project’s journey reflects the perseverance and partnership of a dedicated school community. Teachers, administrators, students, and parents played an integral role throughout planning and design, shaping a facility that is not only functional but deeply rooted in their shared values. Today, the new entry and administrative renovations create a clear, welcoming arrival experience, while the Multi-Use Building fulfills the Bellevue Union School District’s promise to provide equitable, high-quality facilities for every learner.
