Designed at the intersection of healthcare and retail, Hearing Aid Centers expand access to hearing evaluation and fitting services in a warm, community-oriented environment.

Designing Accessible Hearing Care in a Retail Setting
Kaiser Permanente, Redwood City’s new retail hearing-aid center integrates clinical performance with a welcoming, community-oriented retail environment. The project reimagines hearing care as an approachable neighborhood resource, bringing evaluation, consultation, and device fitting into an intuitive and comfortable storefront setting. The design responds to a growing shift toward consumer-facing healthcare environments that prioritize accessibility, clarity, and dignity.

Architectural Planning for an Intuitive Patient Journey
The center is organized to support a clear and seamless patient experience, beginning with an open reception and consultation zone that establishes transparency and ease of navigation. Spatial planning emphasizes visual connection, intuitive circulation, and privacy where needed, creating a balanced environment that feels both professional and approachable. Thoughtful adjacencies between reception, evaluation, and fitting areas support efficient clinical workflows while minimizing patient stress and confusion.

Interior Design for Comfort, Acoustics, and Performance
Private evaluation and fitting rooms were designed as specialized acoustic environments, integrating sound-controlled construction, calibrated lighting, and tailored furnishings to support accurate testing and personalized device fittings. Interior finishes were selected to soften the clinical experience, using maintenance-friendly materials, calming color palettes, whimsical artwork, and residential-scale detailing to foster comfort and trust. The result is a high-performance clinical interior that feels inviting rather than institutional.

A Growing Retail Healthcare Typology
Hearing-care retail centers represent an emerging healthcare typology that blends medical functionality with the accessibility and visibility of retail design. Driven by demographic shifts, increased awareness of hearing health, and advances in hearing technology, demand for these services is rising. This project reflects a broader trend toward decentralized, community-based health resources that meet patients where they are physically and emotionally. As such, this center was one of Kaiser’s first centers to emerge in the Bay Area market and is being utilized to set template standards for the company.

Community-Focused Design for Lifelong Connection
At its core, the design supports connections between patients and providers, technology and users, and individuals and their communities. By embedding clinical-grade environments within a friendly retail setting, these centers lower barriers to care and encourage ongoing engagement. The project demonstrates how architecture and interior design can elevate everyday healthcare spaces, creating environments that are both technically rigorous and deeply human-centered.
