WINDEMERE MIDDLE SCHOOL

San Ramon, CA | Complete

The completed Windemere Ranch Middle School is unique in that it is a developer-built school. The design skillfully blends the district’s programmatic and educational needs with the Mediterranean style homes of the surrounding Shapell and BLC/Windemere developments.

The planning and design process was considerably more complex than had this been a district-built school. In addition to frequent meetings between the architect and a committee of teachers, school principals, and maintenance and facilities staff, there were ongoing meetings between the architect, developers and the school district. Perhaps the trickiest aspect of this project, but ultimately the most successful, was the collaboration necessary to align the needs and priorities of the school district and developers.

The school boasts state-of-the art computer and media labs, a multi-purpose facility with commercial kitchen and a gymnasium. The main campus is nestled into the upper terrace of the site like an Italian hill town, overlooking the valley below. Architecturally, towers, cupolas, arcades and ‘Tuscan’ colors create a rich and varied composition and central courtyard and amphitheater that provide outdoor social and educational opportunities for the students.
