SWIM CENTER, VINTAGE HIGH SCHOOL
Napa, CA | Complete
Planning for the new swim center began almost began in 2004 with initial discussions between the water polo and swim team coaches centered on getting the pool sized for best use and maximum flexibility. Additionally, planning allowed for public use during the summer months.
The design allows year-round competitive High School swimming and water polo in a CIF-regulation 150 ft. x 75 ft. pool, and summer recreational and instructional uses by the City.
Constraints on available funding pushed the design team to look for passive “green” design strategies. Translucent glass block and polycarbonate panels to allow daylight and encourage “greenhouse” warmth in winter months, while a calculated roof overhang cuts off direct sun during the summer. Strategically located high and low operable vents permit cross-ventilation in summer, or accumulation of heat in winter. Simple colored block was used for beauty and durability.
The facility includes restrooms, lockers, changing areas, a coach’s office, storage, a concessions room, and the pump-filter area. The concrete masonry used for the primary buildings provides a sense of permanence, while paying homage to the school colors. A gateway arch and colonnade of overhead light standards form a strong and welcoming gesture for swim center events.
