SOUTH WRIGHT ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Santa Rosa, CA | Anticipated Completion 2015

This project presented the challenge of designing a new school with a cohesive design theme around an architecturally uninspired existing classroom building, a remnant of a former private school. This challenge was overcome by using the simple gable roof of this building as the springboard for an engaging, playful design theme of alternating gable and butterfly roofs.

A pedestrian corridor through the campus links the two parking lots and provides a strong, clear organizational element. A rich and varied outdoor learning environment includes a main courtyard assembly space. As one moves further into the school the outdoor spaces become smaller and more intimate and include raised garden beds in proximity to classrooms.

Classrooms have multiple exterior walls to facilitate natural illumination and ventilation. An interior landscaped court provides a calming view into a garden and allows several classrooms to be grouped together while preserving access to light and ventilation. Numerous other green strategies include extensive use of permeable surfaces, underground storm water detention, and energy efficient HVAC systems.
