CULINARY CAFE, SANTA ROSA JUNIOR COLLEGE
Santa Rosa, CA | Complete
Located in a long abandoned storefront in downtown Santa Rosa, the Santa Rosa Junior College Culinary Arts Center has brought vitality to the neighborhood as well as the college’s culinary training program.
Sonoma County is at the heart of Northern California wine country. There is a shortage of entry-level cooks, bakers and trained waiters for the world-class restaurants in the region. The Santa Rosa Junior College’s new Culinary Arts facility seeks through its programs to fill these needs. Operating as a public restaurant in the commercial center of downtown Santa Rosa the facility provides real life experience not only in culinary arts but also in front-of-house skills.
Unlike a typical restaurant that might have a half a dozen workers in the kitchen, the Culinary Center has as many as 55 students working at a huge number of cooking and preparation stations. The transparency of the design showcases the activities of the center and invites patrons in. As a neighborhood facility it has brought more urban vitality to a formerly quiet corner of the downtown and at the same time raised public awareness of the programs of the college in a way on-campus facilities cannot.
