FRANK P. DOYLE LIBRARY, SANTA ROSA JUNIOR COLLEGE

Santa Rosa, CA | Complete

Planning Strategies: This large four-story building with a deep footprint called for a planning strategy that delineates major traffic paths and destination hubs. Color, material, floor patterns and lighting strategies were developed to reinforce this concept. In particular, the Rotunda, which forms the “hub” of the building, was detailed with a richly colored high-performance plaster-like coating. Ceiling coffers and lighting design emphasize major pathways. And signage has a noticeable presence to help visitors find their way through the building.

Neighborhoods in a Library: Within the context of a consistent color and furnishings palette, specialized areas were given their own unique identities that spoke to their needs. Active computer areas are furnished with custom two-tone wood carrels. Quiet Study areas have acoustical wall treatment and comfortable seating. Finally, the Café enjoys a bit of whimsy through use of organic forms and accent lighting.

Technology for All: A variety of custom-designed Computer access stations meet the needs of quick reference, long-term study, media viewing, and access by those with disabilities. Distance Learning classrooms, Media Viewing rooms and a TV Studio employ the latest technology, all incorporated with state-of-the-art furnishings, fixtures and equipment.

Furniture Procurement: By splitting the furniture specifications into four bid packages, the client got the products that best met their needs at a low price point. A careful selection process and specification of acceptable alternates gave bidders options with some healthy competition.
