LIBRARY & LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER, NAPA VALLEY COLLEGE
Napa, CA | Under Construction
Timelessness in a modern building: Modern architecture, particularly as it is experienced in an interior environment, must support the culture and function of it’s users. The interior design for this project followed the lead of the architectural context though careful use of cool and warm neutral tones, rich textures and thoughtfully placed color accents. In this way, the striking volumes of space, natural lighting and clear delineation of circulation paths are reinforced with simple furniture forms and a quiet material palette.
Custom Furniture: This new Library and Learning Center, due to open in Summer 2010, has high goals of serving current, future and unknown needs in a way that allows for flexibility and durability while maintaining an uncompromising level of design. Custom reading tables with solid bamboo tops, hollow “plinth” bases and a technology infrastructure flexible enough to support a variety of needs appears clean and simple. Durability of materials was addressed with sturdy yet tasteful details and hardware.
Flexible Spaces: Many of the rooms are designed to allow a variety of uses, in particular the Community Reading Room, whose flexible furniture can be rearranged for formal meetings, seminars, small gatherings or public meetings. Classroom furniture is designed to allow flexible arrangement for traditional learning, collaborative work and technology interface. Audio-Visual components are housed in specialized teacher stations and ancillary furniture pieces so that cables and equipment racks are comfortably and securely accommodated.
