DETURK ROUND BARN, CITY OF SANTA ROSA

Santa Rosa, CA | Anticipated Construction 2010

DeTurk Round Barn, built in 1891, sits in a simple park setting in Santa Rosa's historic West End Neighborhood. Built originally to house prized trotting horses, it will now be reconfigured as a community building for use in the City of Santa Rosa Recreations and Parks Department. As one of only two “true round barns” in the State of California it is a special place, and as such requires careful consideration, with ample community input. The project will include the addition of new restrooms, catering room, and storage. New stairs and an elevator will also be added, in part to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. The park will have a reconfigured dog park, an important amenity for the adjoining community.

The barn is being seismically upgraded to accommodate the newest uses. The building will have all of its supporting wood posts removed and replaced with steel columns. This wood will be re-milled and reused as wall finish in the barn. The barn will also be raised by one foot in order to accept a new post-tensioned concrete slab and 6” concrete curb.
