DALLAS RANCH MIDDLE SCHOOL

Antioch, CA | Complete

While planning the 1200-student Dallas Ranch Middle School, educators and other school district representatives identified the desire for a central courtyard at the heart of the campus. The intent was for this courtyard to serve as an organizing element and provide the school with a strong sense of community.

In response, sculptural buildings featuring sweeping curves were arranged to define the perimeter of the courtyard. Orienting the primary axis of the courtyard toward nearby 3,849-foot Mt. Diablo provides a dramatic backdrop.

The result is a dynamic outdoor space that is clearly the heart and soul of campus. The courtyard provides a variety of opportunities for outdoor activities. A prominent outdoor amphitheater is a focal point at one end. A roll-up door at the multi-use room allows the indoor stage to be used in conjunction with the amphitheater.

The limited size of the site dictated two-story classroom buildings. This was approached as an opportunity to reinforce the sweeping forms of the courtyard. Dramatic stair towers and 2-story walkways reinforce the perimeter of the courtyard while providing sweeping vistas towards the hills beyond.
